In 1970, Bruce McLaren, the founder of the company McLaren, wanted to construct a GT car that he could use on the street to find out which engineering problems the company had to overcome. Working with the engineer Gordon Coppuck, Bruce wanted to enhance the prototype, and it was his goal to produce 250 vehicles annually. Despite this, only two McLaren M6 GTs were ever constructed. A prototype was personally owned by Bruce McLaren, but his untimely death in a car accident put an end to the project. He was very passionate and determined about the success of the McLaren M6 GT.
The specifications for this car were highly impressive. It could reach a top speed of 180 miles per hour, and it could go from 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds. While this may not be so fast when compared to modern vehicles, it was remarkable at the time of its inception, and it showcased the true engineering capabilities of the company. The powertrain used a Chevrolet LT1, and the cylinder was a V8. The angle of the cylinder was 90 degrees, and the capacity of the engine was 4993 cc. The M6 GT only had two valves, and the bore was 102.1. The cast block was made out of cast iron, and the cylinder heads were made of cast iron as well. The transmission for the M6 GT was a Hewland LG 600.
The transmission is a five speed, and this car uses a limited slip differential. The chassis was designed with a front suspension that used coil springs that were independent, and it also had A-arms that were fabricated. The rear suspension of the vehicle was also made from an coil spring that was independent, and both the front and back disk were Girling ventilated. The standard color that came with the M6 was orange. While this car may have been produced in the 1960s, it had a design that was way ahead of its time. For example, most sports cars and supercars during the 1980s had body designs which were angular, but the M6 GT used a design that was much more circular.
Even today, the M6 GT has a formidable presence and performance. Like most supercars, it had two doors, and it was designed for speed. This meant that few luxury items would be added to the interior of the vehicles, and this would increase weight and reduce speed. Like virtually all of the cars in its class, the McLaren M6 was built for speed. The production of the M6 was built during three periods.
